History
Originating from America in the 1900's,
when a retired French soldier, Peter Pieri, took seeds
from Corsica to the Walla Walla Valley of Washington,
Sweet Onions have become a well known onion variety
and have helped to increase onion consumption in the
USA by about 20%. In some places in America, and at
certain times of the year, Sweet Onions are the only
onion available to buy.
With increased worldwide travel, food tastes have also
travelled globally and Sweet Onions have been a great
success in South Africa. Here in the UK, Sweet Onions
are growing in popularity and once you've tasted a Sweet
Onion - we're convinced you'll want to buy them again.
Working closely with a global grower base, Rustler Produce
is proud to be able to bring you Sweet Onions all year
round. Moving from country to country throughout the
year ensures that the sweetest, freshest onions are
bought and delivered back to the UK.
Our Sweet Onions are sourced from the countries below.

Growing Sweet
Onions
Most onion varieties form
bulbs when the temperature and number of daylight hours
reach certain levels. Sweet Onions are known as a short-day
onion. Short-day refers to the hours of daylight required
to activate bulbing. The larger the onion plant at the
time the bulb is formed, the larger and sweeter the
onion. Short-day onions start forming bulbs when there
are 11-12 hours of daylight; whereas long-day varieties
need more than 14 hours of daylight.
